Cigarette smoking leads to many health diseases that can cause disabilities and even death. Although medical experts have conducted numerous studies proving the grave effects of smoking on smokers' health, millions of people around the world are still addicted to this habit. Non-smokers' health are also threatened by the second-hand smoke emitted by first-hand smokers. In medical terms, second-hand smoke, also referred to as passive smoke or exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, is generally an admixture of smoke emitted by a lighted cigarette or tobacco. It is also the smoke that is exhaled by smokers. Second-hand smoke stays in the air for hours, and it is uncontrollably inhaled by non-smokers, which may include children.

If you look deeply in the physical, emotional, social, and financial effects of smoking, you will realize that more than the cost of each single cigarette, you are truly paying dearly for every puff. Government health warnings have been attached to every cigarette package since 1965 in the United States. Still, a lot of people choose to ignore these warnings in exchange of the satisfaction a puff of smoke gives them. A survey done in 2004 showed that in the U.S. alone, some 46 million people aged 18 and above are smokers, which means that much number off the population are not getting shaken enough to kick the habit.

"Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the United States" - this is the most disturbing fact that the Surgeon General's Report contains. However, this mere statement is only half as disturbing when you find out that this report was made way back in 1982 because at present, the number of fatalities related to smoking increases every day. Based on a very intricate study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by the end of 2004, the current number of American adults who were smoking on a regular basis reached a staggering 44.5 million, making more than 20% of Americans smokers.

Cigarette smoking has also set a new mortality trend on modern day American society. Hair loss is one of the body changes that most people fear of. Just like menopause, hair loss can easily divulge a person's age. But unlike menopause, which can be kept from everyone but yourself, hair loss can be detected or seen by almost everybody. At about the age of 35, the effect of hair loss can already be seen in men -- either their hair line recedes or a "dome" begins to appear at the back of their hair; some even experience both. In Profollica.com, it is stated that 65% of all men are suffering from the effects of hair loss and a majority of them have Male Pattern Baldness. Women, on the other hand, are affected by hair loss in a different way. Starting at the age of 30, their hair gradually thins out. By the age of 50 or shortly after their menopausal stage, the scalp becomes more noticeable because of lessened hair strands all over the head.

Are you losing your head because you're losing your hair? Although it's quite normal to lose a few strands daily, excessive hair fall can lead to bald patches and ultimately, baldness. This is especially true for men who, unlike women, are prone to baldness due to their genetic makeup. Testosterone, the same hormone which makes you feel manly and all, is the culprit. Once this hormone comes in contact with your hair follicles, it's converted into DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, which shrinks your strands and thickens your scalp. This reduces blood flow to your scalp and makes your strands unhealthy, thus, promoting hair loss.
